One of the hardest mental health disorders to deal with in the psychological world is bipolar disorder. What makes this disease even more difficult is that there are many different types of bipolar disorder that each has their own signs and symptoms. Making the initial diagnosis of bipolar is often a difficult process, but narrowing it down to what form can be even harder. As bad as that sounds there are a multitude of services available to help not only those who suffer from this disorder but also their friends and family.

Of all the ways to get support for bipolar disorder the first and best step is to seek out help from a mental health professional. This is true for those who believe they have this disease or for the friends and family of those who are close to someone they feel may need help. A mental health expert can guide those who have this condition to the treatment that will work best for them. Before this can happen the person with the possible bipolar disorder must be examined and tested in order to get an accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

There are many treatment options available for those who suffer from bipolar disorder. Because every one single instance of this disease is unique it sometimes takes a combination of treatments to help those who suffer from it. The wide range of treatments includes prescription medications, individual counseling and therapy, and support groups for those with bipolar disorder and their families. The first step of any bipolar therapy is to control the symptoms. This is normally done with medications. Counseling is the next step which helps people who have bipolar disorder learn how to cope with their illness. This involves recognizing the symptoms and strategies to deal with them. Bipolar support groups make dealing with this frightening condition much easier for its sufferers.

There are a whole variety of resources available for those who are seeking bipolar support. Doing a simple search of the internet will reveal a multitude of websites and other resources that can help people learn how to take effective action against this condition. Family and friends of those who have bipolar disorder can also use the internet to help them understand what their loved one is going through and how best they can help.

If therapy is currently being used ask your therapist for a list of bipolar support groups in your area. They should have this information available and can give you valuable information about which support group may work best for you.

Like many other mental disorders, Bipolar disease cannot be cured. With proper treatment, however, those suffering from Bipolar disease can manage their disorder. A good prognosis depends largely on the individual and the way in which they manage their disorder.

Successful treatment plans for those suffering from Bipolar include becoming as informed as possible about their disorder and its treatment. Treatment also includes taking the right kind and correct dosage of medicines as prescribed by their doctor. A support system comprised of a competent medical doctor, therapist and family members or friends is also crucial to the Bipolar individual. Finally, these individuals should also seek to establish a balanced lifestyle with a low level of stress.

First, those suffering from Bipolar disease should seek to learn as much as they can about the disorder they suffer from. This may include reading books about the disorder as well as keeping a journal of their own symptoms and mood swings. Only by being familiar with their mood cycles and the way they feel when beginning one of their manic or depressive cycles, can they tell their doctor when they have a problem.

Next, they must take their mood stabilizing medicines exactly as their doctor prescribes. All medicines given to help stabilize Bipolar disease should be taken on a regular basis in order for them to best stabilize the moods. If people suffering from Bipolar suddenly stop taking their medicines, the Bipolar symptoms may become worse. Also, patients shouldn’t take more or less of their medications unless they have permission from their doctor. Altering the medicine dosage may also cause symptoms to worsen or may cause the patient to become unusually drowsy.

A support system is also crucial to anyone suffering from Bipolar disease. This support system should include a medical doctor who will help the patient to find medications that will work best for them and their individual condition and symptoms. A warm and caring therapist will also help the patient sort through the confusing feelings and emotions associated with Bipolar Disease. Members of the immediate family and/or significant other are also integral parts of the support system. Theses people can give the emotional support needed to get through the emotional ups and downs associated with Bipolar disease.

A balanced lifestyle is also important for those suffering from Bipolar disease. This balance can come in the form of lessening stress. While there is some stress that comes with life, some extra stress, such as taking on more work than you can handle, can be avoided. Patients should also seek to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly as well as getting up and going to bed at the same time each day.

By taking steps to follow a treatment plan, those suffering with Bipolar disease can manage and learn to live with their disease. They must learn as much as they can about their disorder, take their medicines correctly, and seek a balanced lifestyle. By taking advantage of their family, doctor, and therapist as a support system, Bipolars can learn to live successfully with their disease.

Everybody gets down or feels blue from time to time. It’s a natural thing. But others get truly and seriously depressed - unable to cope with day-to-day life or to live their lives in anything resembling a normal fashion.

Depression comes in many forms, and affects more than 18 million American adults each year. Over a million preschoolers have currently been diagnosed as clinically depressed. 15% of most developed countries suffer from severe depression, and 30% of women suffer from depression - and 41% of those won’t seek treatment. In fact, 80% of the people who are now suffering from any form of depression are not currently being treated. Many simply don’t recognize the signs.

Experts report that depression will be the second biggest killer in the United States by the year 2020 and 15% of people with depression currently commit suicide each year.

While the condition of depression has received more awareness and understanding, the treatment for depression hasn’t improved very much. There have been many new drugs introduced to the market place to treat depression, but he side affects are often worse or more serious than the depression! In fact, there seem to be just as many lawsuits against the makers of these drugs as there are drugs!

While everybody agrees that depression must be treated, the method of treatment has not been entirely agreed upon. Only recently has it been acknowledged that depression causes more than mental pain - it also causes physical pain. Some experts believe depression should be treated with medication. Others lean towards therapy and counseling. Some believe that sufferers need both medication and counseling.

In spite of all of this, more and more people are suffering from depression each year. The problem is not going away - it’s getting bigger and there are still no viable solutions in sight.

What many people, including health care professionals, rarely stop to consider is what is causing the depression. Instead of focusing on the cause, they only want to find relief. Unfortunately, finding the cause is often part of finding relief, especially when it comes to depression.

Some depression is caused by life events, and this type of depression usually passes untreated - because it’s natural. For instance, when there is a death in the family, the surviving members of that family may experience a period of depression and grief. When one loses a job, they may be down until they find a new job. Again, this is depression that is perfectly natural and normal, as long as the feelings of depression don’t linger on or become too severe.

Other types of depression are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Too much or too little production of serotonin in the brain causes one to feel depressed. People who work the graveyard shift often experience depression simply because they are not getting enough sunshine - which produces serotonin.

What many people don’t realize is that toxins in the body can also cause depression. Those toxins make you not feel well - or not feel “quite right.” You obviously aren’t sick, and you have no reason to feel depressed - but you aren’t sleeping well, your energy isn’t what it should be, and you may even have aches and pains. No matter what you do, those feelings persist. Depression is imminent!

Antioxidants, which detoxify the body and cleanse the cells, have proven to also be natural anti-depressants - with no side effects.

Severe depression should be treated by a doctor. Even mild depression may need treatment. But consider using an antioxidant as well to see how you feel, and also get the counseling that should be recommended to see what the underlying cause of your depression is.

Depression is one of the most debilitating mental disorders of our modern era. It affects nearly 10 million Americans every year. Although it is primarily thought of as a mental condition it can also inflict varying amounts of pain and discomfort that manifest as physical symptoms of depression.

One of the problems with the associated with the physical symptoms of depression is the misdiagnosis of the mental illness itself. Doctors, when presented with these physical symptoms, will test for and diagnose a physical illness and prescribe treatments to treat these symptoms not knowing or understanding that the symptoms are hiding a more insidious disease.

When you look at a list of these physical symptoms you can see why these misdiagnosis and mistreatments can occur.

1. Headaches - These are one of the first symptoms that can occur with depression. In fact headaches can be intensified to migraine like intensity in someone who is suffering from it.

2. Chest Pains - Depression can cause chest pains, which for most people is a sign of an impending heart attack. While any chest pain should be checked by a doctor it can also be a symptom of a depressed person.

3. Sleep Disorders - People who suffer from depression can have either problems going to sleep (insomnia) or they sleep for excessively long periods of time. Thy may have trouble getting out of bed as well.

4. Digestive System Issues - Diarrhea, constipation, and nausea are all symptoms of depression.

5. Extreme Fatigue - The majority of people who suffer from depression also suffer from perpetual exhaustion. This can relate back to the sleep disorders and it doesn’t seem to matter how much sleep they get they still are fatigued.

6. Back Pain and Muscle Aches - Depression can intensify the pain and discomfort of people who are already suffering from these conditions.

7. Appetite and Weight Issues - People with depression can experience either a lack of appetite or intense cravings for certain foods. This can be accompanied by either weight gain or weight loss.

Another issue for people who suffer from more severe forms of depression may be even harder to diagnose because with increased severity can come delusions and hallucinations. It can become increasingly difficult to know whether a depression sufferer actually has some of these symptoms or if they are inventing them.

It is also easier for many people to accept the physical symptoms of depression then the mental symptoms. There are many people and cultures that place a social stigma on anyone with a mental illness. It is therefore easier to accept and treat a more benign physical ailment then it is to deal with issues of the mind.

What many people do not understand is that with the successful treatment of the underlying depression with either therapy or medication or both the physical symptoms of depression will often be resolved. Unfortunately treating the physical manifestations will do nothing for actual the depression and without proper treatment it will normally continue to get worse. It is therefore of the utmost importance to treat the depression itself if a sufferer is to see any relief from the physical symptoms of depression.

Depression is a common psychological illness in the United States with around 9.5 percent of the population suffering from it some time during their lives. Unfortunately only about half of those people ever seek treatment for their depression symptoms which can become a burden for not only its sufferers but also to those close to them.

Depression is a complex illness that requires substantial intervention by a psychiatrist or psychologist to cure. In addition to consistent counseling prescription medication is also an option in the fight against depression. While the cost of counseling and medication can be prohibitive the cost of not obtaining treatment for depression can have far worse ramifications.

Depression is a serious illness that disrupts the life of its sufferers and their loved ones. Daily life becomes a struggle for those afflicted and can get to the point where the depressed begins to hate not only themselves but everything around them, creating a mental environment where death can seem like the only way out. For family and friends watching someone they care about slowly sink into the pit of depression can be extremely frustrating and painful. The good thing is that anyone suffering from depression can be helped and live a long and normal life, but to do that they have to seek help and have the love and support of friends and family.

Finding the right depression treatment begins with acknowledging that there is a problem to begin with. Once the sufferer is honest with themselves about their condition the next steps are much easier and the road to treating and curing the depression will be much easier to navigate.

The first step for anyone suffering from depression is to make an appointment to see a psychiatrist or psychologist who can further evaluate the situation. Sometimes it’s easier for someone with depression to visit their personal physician who can recommend a good counselor. Once the initial assessment is made the treatment can be tailored to the individual’s needs and symptoms.

Psychotherapy is the most popular form of depression treatment and when combined with anti-depressant drugs has the highest recovery rate. Psychotherapy involves therapy sessions that can last for just about any length of time. It is totally dependent upon the patient and the therapist to decide when the treatment has been successful. The great thing about psychotherapy is it allows the patient to open up and talk about anything and everything which will lead to the reasons they are depressed. This allows the therapist to talk the patient through their feelings and how to best deal with the situations that have caused the depression.

Anti-depressant drugs are very popular these days, mainly because they can help lift a person from their depression much quicker than just going to therapy sessions. When used in conjunction with therapy the success rate for overcoming depression is very high. These anti-depressant drugs allows the depression sufferer to more easily get back out into society and feel good about themselves while attending the therapy sessions get to the root of the depression and how to deal with it on a long term basis.

The last thing most people who suffer from depression want to do is exercise. The dark hole of depression can make even getting out of bed everyday a seemingly impossible task. If you suffer from depression it is imperative that you see your doctor or a therapist first, but don’t be surprised if they prescribe some sort of exercise regimen for you to follow in addition to some of the more normal treatments for depression.

Now as hard as it may seem to get out and start exercising when you are depressed there are some real benefits to be had.

1. Improves your confidence. As you get in better shape you will gain more confidence in yourself and your ability to meet your goals.

2. Increases your self-esteem. Exercise will improve your appearance and your sense of self worth. It will also improve your health and vitality.

3. A distraction. Having a set schedule for your exercise routine, no matter what it is, gives you something to look forward to and can help take your mind off of your problems.

4. Stress relief. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and frustration.

5. Getting out. Exercising allows you to get out and interact with other people, whether at the gym or just greeting people during your nightly walk.

6. Good coping strategy. Exercise is beneficial to anyone who does it. It is a positive way to deal with depression, anxiety or stress because you will benefit in the long run from it.

An important thing to remember is that as hard as it may seem to start exercising when you are depressed is that if you can get started the benefits will far outweigh any negative thoughts you may have about doing it. And once you get going don’t give up. Once you’ve decided to start exercising make sure you don’t over do it. Because nothing will cause you to loose all interest more than a sore and broken body.

Here are some general guidelines to consider before you start your exercise program.

1. Talk to your doctor or therapist first. They can help guide you and refer you to someone who can help you set up an exercise program that’s right for you.

2. Set simple goals. Exercise should be fun and make you feel good. Don’t approach it like you are training for the Olympics. Start easy and build from there.

3. Go with what you enjoy. If you have worked out in the past and enjoyed what you were doing start with that again. For some people just simply going for a walk is enjoyable for them.

4. Find a workout buddy. Exercising with a friend is great for helping lift your mood. It gives you someone to talk to and enjoy your work-out with.

5. Go outside. Getting out in the fresh air and sun is always a good way to improve your mood. Even if you work-out in a gym, take the time to go for a walks a couple of times a week.

6. Don’t let set backs get you down. Some days you may not be able to get in your exercise. Don’t let that bother you, it happens to everyone. Keep at it and you will see your growth.

Using exercise as a treatment for depression is a growing trend. But you should always consult your doctor or therapist if you are feeling depressed or exhibit the symptoms of depression. Embarking on an exercise program on your own is not the right thing to do. It should be used in conjunction with other treatments such as medication and therapy. Taken together with these other therapies, exercise can be a great way to help battle your depression.

It may surprising to learn that as many as 20 out of 100 people experience clinical depression every year. These aren’t the normal blues most people experience at one time or other in their daily lives, usually related to a specific event or circumstance. The clinically depressed person has symptoms of melancholy on an almost daily basis that occurs independently of extenuating life events.

If a person is believed to be suffering from the symptoms of depression, it’s important to contact a physician immediately since only a medical professional can determine the correct diagnosis. If medical evaluation reveals that the patient is, indeed, suffering from clinical depression, it’s heartening to know there are effective treatment options available to get the depressed person back on his feet and functioning at peak capacity.

What treatment options are available to the depressed person?

1. Lifestyle modifications

Sometimes simple lifestyle changes can benefit the symptoms of clinical depression. Such lifestyle modifications as altering sleeping habits, diet, and a regular exercise routine can have a beneficial effect on mild cases of depression. These changes should be implemented first before proceeding to more intense therapy options since antidepressant medications can have undesirable side effects.

2. Counseling

The depressed patient may be referred to a psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist or other specialist to receive counseling sessions. The current trend is for counseling to be short term, primarily using talk therapy to identify sources of conflict in the depressed persons life. Sometimes just the simple act of talking and sharing feelings can have a pronounced positive impact on depressive symptoms.

3. Medications

Antidepressant medications have become the mainstay of therapy for the depressed person since they’ve been shown to be effective. Unfortunately, medications don’t exert their positive effects immediately. Upon starting an antidepressant medication, most patients will report feeling better after about 3 weeks of treatment with increased energy level, appetite, and a more positive outlook on life. Therapy is usually continued for a period of at least 6 months. If the depressive symptoms recur once medication is discontinued, it may be necessary to take the medication for a prolonged period of time.

Which of the above treatments work best? In most cases, a combination of counseling, medication, and lifestyle changes gives the best results. Lifestyle modifications are essential to prevent the recurrence of symptoms once antidepressant medications are discontinued. Regular sleep habits, daily exercise sessions, and dietary modifications should become standard practice for any patient who suffers from depression.

As you can see, depression can be effectively treated and the depressed person can once again experience a rich and full life.

This article about the intense subject of depression anticipates two ways of reaction. The question is: Will it be - in your case - shock or relief?

When you read about depression, you will encounter many passages like the following:

“These brain chemicals - in varying amounts - are responsible for our emotional state. Depression happens, when these chemical messages aren’t delivered correctly between brain cells, disrupting communication.”

What could be probably wrong with that statement?

It is based on the unquestioned belief that human beings are machines. Although this assumption is widespread, it is simply not a fact. Machines are built, operated and cared for by conscious human beings. In an analogous way our body and mind exist because of our existence as conscious beings.

It is not matter, which builds consciousness, but it is consciousness, which forms matter. That is actually our observation everywhere.

The matter of depression must be totally reevaluated from this new perspective. It is not a fact that brain chemicals are responsible for our emotional state, but vice versa. Our emotional state leads to the production of certain chemicals in our brain and body.

Of course there is an interlink between the two planes. Emotional states can definitely be influenced by certain chemical substances. But there is some substantial loss of information, as the “positive” state induced by chemicals cannot be compared with a natural positive state derived from the firm foundation in the conviction that life is wonderful.

Here we have arrived at a crucial point.

Depression is not caused by chemicals in the brain, but rather causes chemicals in the brain. Depression is a state of mind, wherein the affected human being has lost his/her connection to the original quality of life, which is bliss, knowledge and eternity.

Neither will medication help to overcome depression, nor superficial psychological treatment. The only way to help the depression sufferer is by unalloyed love, which is rare in this world. This sort of love will not further push him into the state of a helpless and powerless victim, but will empower him to take his fate into his own hands.

In this way the person suffering with depression will be given the chance to see live from a new perspective. He will learn to love himself despite of any shortcomings, because - by feeling appreciated and loved - he will come to love his real spiritual personality, which is always beyond the polarity of material despair and happiness. When he finds shelter in the ultimate quality of pure consciousness, which is unconditional love, he will feel the natural bliss of life.

Consequently this article ends with a request to doctors and psychologists: Become unconditional lovers! All other cures are temporary, like shifting a hurting heavy weight from one shoulder to the other. If you want to solve the root problem, you have to solve it first and foremost in yourself.

Treating bipolar disease is usually accomplished through a bipolar medication such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants and antipsychotic meds used in combination or alone. Such medications may also be coupled with psychotherapy to provide optimum results.

Because bipolar disorder, also known as bipolar disease or depression, is so difficult to identify and treat, it’s important to know that the disease can strike any gender or age group. Normal high and low moments are experienced on a daily basis by millions of Americans every day, but bipolar disorder takes such feelings to an extreme. Ongoing and recurring episodes of both depression and happiness are often the first signs of the disorder, coupled with extreme feelings on both ends of the spectrum.

Mood stabilizing agents are the most common types of bipolar medication treatments. Antidepressants such as Lithium, Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil and Valium are used to treat various levels of depression and offer mood-stabilizing benefits, though in some cases, they can cause mania. For more severe episodes, Haldol or Thorazine are used to control mania. However, such drugs as Haldol and Thorazine, known as neuroeptics, can cause side effects such as muscle spasms, difficulty speaking and tremors.

Lithium is the most commonly prescribed bipolar medication and is used for ongoing treatment, though its full effects may not be experienced for weeks, and sometimes, months. Lithium is also the oldest drug used to treat bipolar disorder. It may take four to ten days to achieve a therapeutic level within the bloodstream, and is not as effective on ‘rapid-cyclers’, or those who experience frequent and chronic episodes of depression coupled with mania. For ‘rapid-cyclers’, a bipolar medication known as Valproate is often prescribed.

In some cases, antipsychotic drugs such as Clozaril have been used as a preventative treatment in some bipolar patients, though it tends to cause a rapid heart rate, hypotension, weight gain and constipation. Risperdal is also a common antipsychotic medication that has been successful when used in low doses, and since 2004, it has become the drug of choice in a vast number of bipolar patients. Side effects associated with Risperdal are mild compared to the side effects of other bipolar medication choices used in the past.

Another antipsychotic drug known as Zyprexa, used in combination with lithium or valproate for severe manic episodes, may cause low blood pressure and dizziness. Another very common antipsychotic known as Seroquel has a long-term mood stabilizing affect, while its side effects may include dizziness and elevated blood sugar levels.

Most bipolar medication antidepressants may cause manic episodes in those suffering from bipolar disorder, so they are used only on a short-term basis. More often, the class of drugs known as Selective Serotonin reuptake Inhibitors, more commonly known as SSRI’s, are prescribed, and include such drugs as the aforementioned Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil anti-anxiety drugs.

The most important aspect of treating bipolar disorder is to first recognize the symptoms of the disease and seek treatment. A doctor will decide which medication is right for each individual. However, it’s good to know that bipolar medication is available which may aid thousands of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder to live relatively happy, normal lives.

Bipolar depression is a condition that routinely persists in the daily life of some individuals. Such depression is not what many of us feel on occasion, but are extreme and severe episodes that affect personal lives and work, and ability to function on a daily basis.

Feeling good or sad on occasion are parts of daily life for everyone, yet for someone diagnosed with bipolar depression, those ups and downs can cause such a severe disruption of activities that life may sometimes seem pointless.

Such episodes of bipolar depression cause sufferers to feel extremely sad and provoke periods of worthlessness, disinterest and unconcern about anything around them. Many people who suffer from this condition don’t even want to get out of bed or eat. This period of extreme disinterest may last days, or sometimes weeks, which is why it is so important to recognize its signs and symptoms. If left untended, many sufferers lose friends, their job, and many will starve themselves or even commit suicide.

However, recognizing the signs of bipolar depression is not easy. Since most people experience periods of ‘blues’ or malaise, victims, family and friends almost always assume that the person will ’snap out of it’ or feel better soon. For some, these feelings may be intermittent, which makes it even more difficult to recognize. For most, feeling ‘blue’ is also accompanied by a lack of interest in anything the person used to take pleasure in, including sex. One may also feel worthless or express lack of hope or faith in the future. Such persons may also experience a change in sleeping habits and weight.

This condition can strike any gender and at any age. Scientists believe that the condition is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, as well as hormone levels, and in recent years, doctors have observed a link between thyroid hormone levels and bipolar depression.

For some, bipolar depression causes the sufferer to doubt every decision and therefore leads to indecision in even the simplest matters, and such confusion and lack of ability to believe in oneself often leads to thoughts of despair and suicide. These periods of depression can last days, weeks or months. Many people suffer from bipolar depression and don’t even know it. Some accompanying symptoms can be eating disorders, phobias, and panic attacks that cause people to withdraw into isolation.

Many people suffering from bipolar depression want help, but don’t know whom to turn to when everything seems so pointless. Therefore, it’s up to family and friends to know when something is wrong and to encourage and seek help for their loved one.

Keeping track of mood swing frequency, duration and severity helps doctors to determine whether or not you or a loved one is suffering from the condition, but the recognition and desire to seek treatment must start with the family and friends of those suffering from the disease. Bipolar depression can be treated, but only early intervention will make life easier for both the patient and their families.
